About Famara
Famara is Lanzarote at its most open and elemental: a long Atlantic beach below the Risco de Famara, with pale sand, moving dunes, strong light and a horizon that feels much wider than the resort coast. It is one of the island’s great landscape beaches, but it should be understood as a surf and walking beach first, not a calm family bathing beach.
The Vibe
The mood is natural, active and quietly bohemian. Surf schools, kite surfers, bodyboarders and walkers give the beach its rhythm, while Caleta de Famara keeps the atmosphere relaxed rather than polished. It can feel peaceful because there is so much space, but the sea itself is rarely passive. Wind, swell and currents are part of the identity here, so daily conditions matter more than they do on sheltered southern beaches. This is a place for people who enjoy wild coastal energy.
The Setting
The Local Anchor
Caleta de Famara is the anchor: a low-key fishing village turned surf base, with sandy streets, simple restaurants and a strong outdoor culture. The old capital of Teguise sits inland, while the wider Chinijo Archipelago landscape gives Famara a protected, northern-island feel. It is one of the best places in Lanzarote for surf, sunset walks and dramatic scenery.
The Landscape
The setting is the headline. The beach runs below the Famara cliffs, with La Graciosa often visible across the water and the wet sand turning mirror-like at low tide. The landscape is beautiful but exposed, and it asks for respect. Famara is excellent for surf, photography and long walks; for small children or weak swimmers, choose a calmer Blue Flag beach instead.
