The wider setting is unmistakably Gomeran: dry coastal rock below, cultivated valleys inland and old paths linking places the road network reached much later.

From La Cueva, nearby San Sebastián gives the shore a historical and practical centre. After a visit to La Cueva, ferries, fishing craft and old island landmarks share the waterfront, where a meal of fresh fish followed by palm-honey sweets feels firmly rooted in La Gomera.

Facing the east side of La Gomera, La Cueva is framed by a sunrise-facing horizon where the sea often brightens before the land behind it.
