About ALAGOA-ALTURA

On the coast of Castro Marim, Alagoa–Altura occupies the broad, low-lying sands of the eastern Algarve, where dunes and pine woods replace the sculpted cliffs found farther west. It lies directly in front of Altura and forms part of the seemingly continuous eastern sand belt running toward Monte Gordo and the Ria Formosa.

The Vibe

The atmosphere is open, sunny and easy-going, with a family-holiday rhythm and long horizons rather than a cove-like sense of enclosure. Mornings feel clearest, before the main access becomes busy and while the light still reveals the beach’s natural detail. Later, swimmers, walkers and families create a more sociable rhythm.

This is a place for beach games and paddling, but also for watching fishing life along the eastern coast. Even in high summer, water, wind and open sky remain the defining background.

Today's Coastal Conditions

Today's conditions for this stretch of the Algarve coast.

The sea state is currently 0.30m, ankle high, making it excellent for swimmers. The day is expected to be clear with a maximum temperature of 31°C and a minimum of 20°C. The wind is currently 19 km/h from NNW, gusting 34 km/h.

The water temperature is 20.0°C, which is cool, so a spring suit or rashie is recommended for water activities. The wave conditions are suitable for swimmers, and the clear Atlantic water provides good visibility. The ocean conditions are currently calm and safe for swimming.

For outdoor activities, the wind speed of 19 km/h from NNW should be considered when planning cycling, running, or surfing. It's also important to note the very high UV index, with a peak of 8.2, and to avoid direct sun between 11am and 3pm. Additionally, surfers may find the current wave conditions suitable for their activity.

The Setting

The Local Anchor

The local reference point is the eastern Algarve’s fishing towns, salt-marsh landscapes and the mouth of the Guadiana, which has long linked this coast with neighbouring Spain. The shoreline belongs to the Sotavento, where broad sands connect neighbouring communities.

That connection keeps the beach tied to a real place. Nearby menus naturally favour grilled fish, clams, octopus and rice dishes, while cafés and restaurants carry the day gently into the evening.

The Landscape

The scenery combines a continuous sandy shoreline backed by modest dunes, coastal vegetation and, in places, extensive pine woodland. The sand belt continues for kilometres, so the atmosphere changes gradually rather than at a dramatic headland. Conditions are generally gentler and seasonally warmer than on the Atlantic-facing west coast, although wind, tide and swell still alter the water.

Exploring beyond the busiest section reveals geology, vegetation and local coastal use. Alagoa–Altura works as a bathing place, a walking destination and a viewpoint, provided daily sea guidance is respected.
