About ALMARGEM

Set along the central Algarve coast between the Ria Formosa and the resort towns of Quarteira and Vilamoura, Almargem is one of the bathing places associated with Loulé. The beach lies near the mouth of the Ribeira do Almargem, where a small wetland and reed-fringed watercourse meet the coast.

The Vibe

The atmosphere is polished yet relaxed, combining broad beaches with golf, tennis, marina life and long lunches beside the water. Mornings feel clearest, before the main access becomes busy and while the light still reveals the beach’s natural detail. Later, swimmers, walkers and families create a more sociable rhythm.

This is a place for swimming and paddleboarding, but also for golf or tennis nearby. Even in high summer, water, wind and open sky remain the defining background.

Today's Coastal Conditions

Today's conditions for this stretch of the Algarve coast.

The sea state is currently 0.48m, ankle high, making it excellent for swimmers. The day is expected to be clear with a maximum temperature of 32°C and a minimum of 16°C. The current temperature is 21°C with clear blue skies.

The water temperature is 19.3°C, which is cool, so a spring suit or rashie is recommended for water activities. The wave conditions are suitable for swimmers, and the clear Atlantic water provides good visibility. The ocean conditions are currently calm, with a wave height of 0.48m.

For outdoor activities, the current wind speed is 6 km/h from NNW, which is suitable for cycling, running, and surfing. It's essential to take UV protection measures, especially between 11am-3pm, due to the very high UV index. Surfers may find the current wave conditions favorable, with ankle-high waves and a moderate wind forecast for later in the day.

The Setting

The Local Anchor

Its cultural anchor is Loulé’s coastal communities, where traditional fishing around Quarteira now shares the shoreline with internationally known resorts and golf courses. Golf, tennis and sailing are nearby, yet the beach still belongs to a wider working coastline.

This setting offers more than swimming: seafood lunches, older neighbourhoods and glimpses of the working coast. Boats, harbour activity and simply prepared local food keep the Algarve’s maritime heritage visible.

The Landscape

The beach sits among wide sand, low dunes and occasional ochre cliffs, with the Ria Formosa beginning at the quieter eastern end. Dunes and lagoon habitat dominate the east; promenades and low cliffs become stronger westward. Settled summer weather often favours bathing, while afternoon breezes also support sailing and paddle sports.

Tide and light alter the scene constantly. Wet sand reflects the sky, geological layers become clearer and coastal plants show how the shore is reshaped. Posted warnings and supervised bathing zones take priority over general impressions.
