About Banda d'Alem
Banda d’Alem gives Machico a rare sweep of golden sand, creating a sheltered, family-friendly beach beneath green mountains and beside one of Madeira’s most historic coastal towns.
The Vibe
The mood is easy, bright and sociable. The protected bay keeps the setting gentler than many of Madeira’s exposed shores, and the sandy surface makes the beach immediately familiar to visitors travelling with children.
Families settle for long afternoons, young people use the sports areas, and walkers move between the beach, marina and town centre. During summer the beach becomes one of Machico’s main gathering places, but the surrounding bay prevents it from feeling detached from local life.

The Setting
The Local Anchor
Banda d’Alem stands on the right bank of the mouth of Ribeira de Machico. Its sand was imported from Morocco, distinguishing it from the pebble and dark volcanic shores more typical of Madeira. That engineered transformation has become part of the modern identity of Machico Bay.
The beach is supported by changing cabins, showers, toilets, parking, access walkways, lifeguard supervision during the bathing season and facilities for people with reduced mobility. Cafés and restaurants in Machico place local food close at hand, from grilled limpets and fresh fish to bolo do caco served warm with garlic butter.
The Landscape
The beach forms a compact golden arc within a bay enclosed by steep green slopes. The Ribeira de Machico reaches the sea nearby, while the town spreads around the waterfront rather than hiding behind a resort strip.
The contrast is the defining image: pale sand, clear Atlantic water and densely vegetated mountains. Breakwaters and the sheltered geometry of the bay reduce the sense of exposure, though conditions should still be checked before swimming. Banda d’Alem feels unlike most Madeiran beaches, yet it remains unmistakably tied to the island through the surrounding relief, the working town and the volcanic headlands framing the water.
