About Burgau
The Vibe
Burgau feels relaxed, intimate and strongly shaped by its small scale. Families, walkers and repeat visitors use the beach, while the village becomes sociable around cafes and restaurants in the evening. Summer is busy, but the settlement retains a more personal rhythm than the major western Algarve resorts.
The bay can appear sheltered, although Atlantic swell and wind still reach the shore. The usable sand becomes limited at higher tides, and access involves a steep descent through the village. Visitors should follow flags, avoid standing beneath unstable cliff sections and allow extra effort for the uphill return.

The Setting
About Burgau
Burgau is a former fishing village west of Luz, arranged around a steep lane descending to a small sandy bay. Its whitewashed houses, compact beach and low-key restaurants create a village atmosphere that remains distinct from the larger resort centres of Lagos and Praia da Luz.
The Local Anchor
The old fishing quarter is the defining centre. Narrow streets, small boats and modest white houses preserve the village's maritime history even as holiday accommodation has expanded.
Praia da Luz lies east, while Salema and the wilder Costa Vicentina approaches lie west. Burgau also sits on walking routes linking cliff viewpoints and neighbouring coastal settlements, giving it value beyond the beach itself.
The Landscape
A curved sandy shore sits below pale cliffs and a tightly clustered village. The bay faces south, with rocky points framing the view and reducing the sense of open exposure.
Above the beach, houses step up the slope rather than forming a continuous high-rise promenade. Dry scrub and cliff paths begin close to the last streets. Burgau is defined by proportion: small beach, compact village and steep coastal relief combined within a western Algarve setting that still feels recognisably local. The beach is only a short walk from the village centre, but the steep gradient matters for pushchairs, heavy equipment and anyone with limited mobility. Evening light across the bay brings walkers back to the lower streets after the main beach activity has eased.
