About CABANAS-MAR
Set along the barrier-island coast of the Ria Formosa, where the ocean beach is separated from the mainland by tidal channels, salt marshes and shallow lagoons, Cabanas–Mar is one of the bathing places associated with Tavira. A short boat crossing from Cabanas de Tavira leads to the seaward side of Ilha de Cabanas.
The Vibe
The atmosphere is unhurried and spacious, shaped as much by the short crossing to the sand as by the hours spent beside the sea. Mornings feel clearest, before the main access becomes busy and while the light still reveals the beach’s natural detail. Later, swimmers, walkers and families create a more sociable rhythm.
This is a place for photography and nature watching, but also for a seafood lunch after the return crossing. Even in high summer, water, wind and open sky remain the defining background.
Today's Beach Report
The sea state is flat with 0.26m waves, making it ideal for swimming and water activities. The day is expected to be clear with a maximum temperature of 31°C and a minimum of 20°C. Currently, the sky is clear with 3% cloud cover.
The water temperature is 20.7°C, which is cool, so a spring suit or rashie is recommended for water activities. The wave conditions are flat and glassy, making it suitable for paddleboarding and other water sports. The sea state is calm, making it safe for swimmers.
For outdoor activities, the wind is currently 15 km/h from NNW, which may impact cycling and running plans. It's also relevant for surfing and snorkeling timing. With a very high UV index forecast peak of 8.2, it's essential to avoid direct sun between 11am-3pm and take necessary sun protection measures, and surfers may find the flat wave conditions less challenging than usual.

The Setting
The Local Anchor
Behind the beach lies the influence of Tavira and the fishing communities of Santa Luzia and Cabanas, whose boats, waterfronts and seafood traditions remain closely tied to the lagoon. The crossing reinforces the relationship between mainland community, lagoon and island.
The surrounding culture appears in grilled sardines, cataplana, small fishing craft and white houses. These details connect modern leisure with the Algarve’s older maritime life.
The Landscape
The scenery combines a long ribbon of pale sand and dunes, with open Atlantic water on one side and the protected wetlands of the Ria Formosa on the other. The narrow island is continually shaped by wind, tide and moving inlets. The ocean side is usually less forceful than the exposed west coast, though currents around inlets and channels always deserve respect.
Exploring beyond the busiest section reveals geology, vegetation and local coastal use. Cabanas–Mar works as a bathing place, a walking destination and a viewpoint, provided daily sea guidance is respected.
