About Culatra

Culatra sits within the Ria Formosa / Eastern Algarve, shaped by Ria Formosa island community reached by boat. It is part of an Algarve coast where a beach day is never only sand and water; it is also tide, wind, local access, summer rhythm and the judgement of sea conditions.

The Vibe

The mood is quieter and more landscape-led, with tide, wind and walking setting the pace more than nightlife. Here the character comes through island simplicity and seafood culture. The eastern Algarve is tidal and lagoon-shaped, with barrier islands, shallows and ferry-linked beaches.

Today's Beach Report

The sea state is calm with waves at 0.56m, making it excellent for swimmers. The day is expected to be clear with a maximum temperature of 25°C and a minimum of 17°C. Currently, it is mostly cloudy with a temperature of 20°C.

The water temperature is 20.5°C, which is cool, so a spring suit or rashie is recommended for water activities. The wave conditions are ankle high, suitable for swimmers and other water activities. The ocean conditions are generally favorable for swimming and other beach activities.

For outdoor activities like cycling and running, the current wind speed of 9 km/h from WNW is relatively gentle. Surfers may find the conditions suitable, given the moderate wave height. It is essential to take precautions against the sun, as the UV index is expected to be very high, peaking at 8.05, and it is recommended to avoid direct sun between 11am and 3pm.

The Setting

The Local Anchor

The local anchor is the Ria Formosa working coast: Faro, Olhao, Fuseta, Tavira, Cabanas and fishing villages. Around Culatra, everyday Algarve details still matter: fish, ferries or harbours where relevant, boardwalks, old village lanes, seasonal facilities and the habit of planning around sun, wind and water. The beach connects to a real place, not just a view, which is what makes it useful for visitors choosing where to spend the day.

The Landscape

Fishing lanes, lagoon channels and Atlantic-facing sand. The landscape is low, luminous and tidal, with dunes, salt marsh, boardwalks and sandbars running toward Spain. The shore should be read with care: cliffs can mean steep steps and falling-rock zones, river mouths change with the tide, and open Atlantic beaches can look inviting while still carrying strong surf.

It offers the visual pleasure people expect from Portugal, while giving clear reasons to check live wind, wave height, UV and local flags before settling in.
