About FARO-MAR
Set along the southern edge of Faro and the Ria Formosa, where barrier islands divide the city’s lagoon world from a long Atlantic beach, Faro–Mar is one of the bathing places associated with Faro. The main ocean-facing section of Praia de Faro lies on the long island reached by road bridge from the mainland.
The Vibe
The character of Faro–Mar is a mixture of local beach life and protected nature, with aircraft sometimes visible above the lagoon but ample space along the ocean shore. People arrive for walking the long Atlantic shore, but many remain for observing birds and boats across the lagoon and the pleasure of watching the coast change through the day.
Space, light and salt air do most of the work. During the busiest weeks, earlier and later hours are especially rewarding.

The Setting
The Local Anchor
Faro–Mar draws much of its identity from Faro, the Algarve’s regional capital, whose historic walled centre, marina and access to the islands make it the natural gateway to this part of the ria. The protected wetland is more than a backdrop; its channels determine how people reach and use the coast.
Beyond the sand, fish landed along the coast, whitewashed streets, markets and shaded terraces turn a beach stop into a fuller visit. The atmosphere remains Portuguese even where tourism is well established.
The Landscape
The scenery combines sand dunes and tidal channels with views across marshland used by wading birds and migratory species. Within hours, tide can turn exposed mudflat into shining channels and open water. The seaward beach faces open Atlantic water, while the lagoon side is shallower and more sheltered.
Exploring beyond the busiest section reveals geology, vegetation and local coastal use. Faro–Mar works as a bathing place, a walking destination and a viewpoint, provided daily sea guidance is respected.
