About LOTA
Lota belongs to Vila Real de Santo António (Vila Nova de Cacela) and sits within the broad, low-lying sands of the eastern Algarve, where dunes and pine woods replace the sculpted cliffs found farther west. It continues east from Manta Rota; its name recalls the fish-auction vocabulary of a coast long connected with tuna and small-scale fishing.
The Vibe
At Lota, the mood is open, sunny and easy-going, with a family-holiday rhythm and long horizons rather than a cove-like sense of enclosure. It suits travellers who enjoy early-morning exercise, while leaving space for a slow lunch in the coastal towns. The central access may be sociable, yet a short walk usually changes the atmosphere.
Natural sound dominates: surf, wind in coastal vegetation and occasional boat traffic.
Today's Coastal Conditions
Today's conditions for this stretch of the Algarve coast.
The sea state is currently 0.30m, ankle high, making it excellent for swimmers. The day is expected to be clear with a maximum temperature of 31°C and a minimum of 20°C. The wind is currently 19 km/h from NNW, gusting 34 km/h.
The water temperature is 20.0°C, which is cool, so a spring suit or rashie is recommended for water activities. The wave conditions are suitable for swimmers, and the clear Atlantic water provides good visibility. The ocean conditions are currently calm and safe for swimming.
For outdoor activities, the wind speed of 19 km/h from NNW should be considered when planning cycling, running, or surfing. It's also important to note the very high UV index, with a peak of 8.2, and to avoid direct sun between 11am and 3pm. Additionally, surfers may find the current wave conditions suitable for their activity.

The Setting
The Local Anchor
Its cultural anchor is the eastern Algarve’s fishing towns, salt-marsh landscapes and the mouth of the Guadiana, which has long linked this coast with neighbouring Spain. The shoreline belongs to the Sotavento, where broad sands connect neighbouring communities.
This setting offers more than swimming: seafood lunches, older neighbourhoods and glimpses of the working coast. Boats, harbour activity and simply prepared local food keep the Algarve’s maritime heritage visible.
The Landscape
Around Lota, the coast is characterised by a continuous sandy shoreline backed by modest dunes, coastal vegetation and, in places, extensive pine woodland. The sand belt continues for kilometres, so the atmosphere changes gradually rather than at a dramatic headland. Conditions are generally gentler and seasonally warmer than on the Atlantic-facing west coast, although wind, tide and swell still alter the water.
A walk shows where the shore opens, where rocks or channels interrupt it and how closely human activity sits beside natural ground. The location feels Algarvian, but not interchangeable with its neighbours.
