About Maiata
Maiata is a raw northeast-coast beach at Porto da Cruz, where black sand, pebbles and powerful Atlantic waves create one of Madeira’s recognised surfing landscapes.
The Vibe
The mood is energetic, natural and independent. Surfers watch the sets, schools prepare equipment nearby, and visitors quickly understand that the beach is governed by swell rather than by resort routine.
This is not a sheltered family beach. There are no formal support facilities or lifeguard supervision, and the official 2025 annual bathing-water classification was sufficient. The attraction lies in the coastline’s openness, the quality of the waves and the strong visual contrast between dark shore, clear water and green mountain walls.

The Setting
The Local Anchor
Maiata belongs to Porto da Cruz, a north-eastern village where agriculture, rum production and water sports sit surprisingly close together. Surf schools and activity companies use the area, and the beach has become a regional reference for riders of different levels.
The village’s sugar-cane tradition offers a cultural counterpoint to the surf scene. Porto da Cruz is home to an operating rum distillery, and a day by the waves can be followed by local poncha, fresh fish or bolo do caco in the village. This mixture of working landscape and modern outdoor culture gives Maiata a character distinct from Madeira’s managed bathing complexes.
The Landscape
The shore combines black sand and pebbles beneath steep, intensely green slopes. The beach remains visually open to the Atlantic, with little built infrastructure to soften its exposure.
Nearby headlands and the mountain mass above Porto da Cruz frame the water, while changing cloud and sunlight continually alter the colours of the coast. Waves are the central feature rather than a background detail, and sea conditions can be demanding. Maiata should be approached with respect: an impressive place to watch, surf with appropriate experience, or understand the untamed side of Madeira’s northern ocean.
