About Pocas do Gomes - Doca do Cavacas
Doca do Cavacas is one of Funchal’s most distinctive swimming places, where volcanic rock forms natural pools beneath the seafront promenade and the Atlantic enters the city in its rawest form.
The Vibe
The mood is intimate, dramatic and slightly adventurous. The complex is smaller than Lido or Ponta Gorda, so swimmers remain close to the rock, the sound of breaking water and one another. On calm days, the pools feel like private windows into the ocean; when swell increases, the setting becomes visibly more energetic.
Visitors come as much for the scenery as for swimming. The pools sit between Funchal’s main resort district and Formosa Beach, making them an easy stop during a coastal walk. A bar and simple facilities allow the visit to stretch beyond a quick dip.

The Setting
The Local Anchor
Also known as Poças do Gomes, Doca do Cavacas belongs to Madeira’s long tradition of adapting natural lava formations for public bathing. The attraction is not an artificial imitation of a beach but a close, controlled encounter with the island’s geology.
Its position on the promenade makes it part of everyday Funchal rather than an isolated natural attraction. Locals use the coast for exercise and social time, while visitors often combine the pools with Formosa, the Lido district or an evening meal nearby. The official 2025 annual bathing-water classification was poor, so current sample information and posted guidance should always be checked before swimming.
The Landscape
A natural volcanic pool and direct sea access are enclosed by jagged black rock. Showers, toilets, changing rooms and a bar are fitted into a compact site without obscuring the formation beneath them.
The westward view is especially memorable. Formosa stretches along the shoreline, while Cabo Girão rises in the distance, giving the pools a strong sense of place within Madeira’s south coast. Doca do Cavacas is not soft or conventional; its beauty comes from stone, saltwater and the constantly shifting boundary between the pool and the open Atlantic.
