About Poço Velho

In Albufeira, Poço Velho forms part of the long sweep of Praia da Falésia, famous for its layered red, orange and cream cliffs above a broad ribbon of sand. Poço Velho is one of the eastern access points to the Falésia shoreline, offering long walking distances in both directions.

The Vibe

The character of Poço Velho is expansive and energetic without feeling enclosed, ideal for long walks, active beach days and watching the changing light on the cliff face. People arrive for active family beach time, but many remain for watching sunset colours deepen on the cliffs and the pleasure of watching the coast change through the day.

Space, light and salt air do most of the work. During the busiest weeks, earlier and later hours are especially rewarding.

Today's Coastal Conditions

Today's conditions for this stretch of the Algarve coast.

The sea state is excellent for swimmers with wave conditions at 0.34m, ankle high. The day is expected to be clear with a maximum temperature of 32°C. A moderate wind from the north is forecast, but currently, the wind is 10 km/h from NNW.

The water temperature is 20.2°C, making a spring suit or rashie suitable for water activities. The clear Atlantic water and limestone scenery provide a pleasant environment for divers and snorkelers. The wave conditions are also suitable for surfers, although the waves are only ankle high.

For cyclists and runners, the current wind of 10 km/h from NNW is relatively gentle, but it may pick up later in the day. It is essential to take UV protection measures, especially between 11am and 3pm, when the sun's rays are the strongest. Anglers should also be mindful of the wind direction and speed when planning their activities.

The Setting

The Local Anchor

Its cultural anchor is the coastal corridor between Olhos de Água and Vilamoura, linking pine-topped cliffs, resort areas and one of the Algarve’s best-known continuous beaches. The cliff line is fragile and eroding, so marked accesses and safe distances from the rock face matter.

This setting offers more than swimming: seafood lunches, older neighbourhoods and glimpses of the working coast. Boats, harbour activity and simply prepared local food keep the Algarve’s maritime heritage visible.

The Landscape

Here, soft sand beneath high, weathered cliffs, with pines and coastal scrub along the upper edge. Bands of coloured sediment create the striped appearance for which the coast is known. The shore can develop a lively break when swell rises, although settled summer days are widely enjoyed for bathing.

The shoreline is rewarding on foot outside the hottest hours. Different viewpoints clarify the relationship between sand, settlement and natural coast. Waves, wind and official beach guidance should always shape decisions about swimming.
