About Porto do Seixal

Seixal is Madeira’s most cinematic black-sand beach, a dark arc of volcanic shore beneath waterfalls, green escarpments and the cloud-shifting mountains of the north coast.

The Vibe

The atmosphere is tranquil, elemental and deeply scenic. Visitors come to swim, paddle or simply stand at the waterline and take in the surrounding walls of vegetation. Even when the beach is busy, the scale of the mountains keeps human activity visually small.

The harbour provides some shelter, but the setting remains connected to the northern Atlantic. Conditions can change, and the beauty of the place should not be mistaken for guaranteed calm.

The Setting

The Local Anchor

Officially known as Porto de Abrigo do Seixal, the beach lies beside the small harbour and Clube Naval. It has become one of Madeira’s most photographed locations, yet it continues to function as part of a local coastal community rather than a purpose-built resort.

Showers, a bar and kayak rental provide useful support. Bodyboarding, canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding are associated with the beach, while nearby routes lead inland toward the Laurissilva landscape. Seixal’s village setting and north-coast weather give the area a quieter rhythm than Funchal or Calheta.

The Landscape

Fine black sand spreads beneath high, densely green mountains that appear to descend directly into the sea. The dark shore intensifies the colour of the water, while mist and sunlight create rapid changes across the cliffs.

The beach formed naturally beside the harbour, and built elements remain modest compared with the surrounding relief. Waterfalls can be seen along the wider coast, and the road toward Porto Moniz passes through some of Madeira’s most dramatic terrain. Seixal’s defining image is one of contrast: soft black sand against clear water, a small sheltered bay beneath immense volcanic slopes, and tropical-looking greenery rooted in an Atlantic island landscape.
