About El Cotillo
El Cotillo is a low-rise west-coast Fuerteventura village where calm northern lagoons and powerful open-ocean beaches exist close together.
The old harbour area is relaxed and compact, with seafood restaurants and white buildings retaining a fishing-village character.
North of the village, reef-protected lagoons can be comparatively gentle; south-facing open beaches receive stronger Atlantic surf and currents.
It is the relationship between the shore and the place behind it that prevents the destination from feeling interchangeable.
Volcanic geology is never far from the surface here, and the contrast between dark land, bright water and dry subtropical light gives the coast its unmistakable Canarian identity.
Today's Beach Report
This morning, Saturday, July 11, we're looking at a day filled with a mix of overcast skies and potential rain showers, set against the stunning backdrop of our remote windswept fishing village. First and foremost, it's essential to note that there are no maritime alerts to be aware of, so we can all enjoy the day without any additional precautions. As we start the day, the overcast skies and fresh to strong wind from the northeast will certainly make for an interesting morning, with cyclists on exposed routes likely to find conditions challenging, and outdoor tennis courts possibly feeling a bit uncomfortable. However, this unique blend of wind and cloud cover also promises an exciting day for surfers, with the dramatic surf beach and natural rock lagoons waiting to be explored.
Looking out at the beach, the sea state is characterized by moderate waves of about 1.0m, which is waist to chest high, and the water temperature is a comfortable 22.4°C, making it perfect for swimmers, surfers, and paddleboarders alike. The conditions are particularly inviting for surfers, given the wave height and the bohemian surfer atmosphere that pervades our village. For those planning to spend time in the water, the spring suit should provide ample comfort, with a short wetsuit being optional. It's worth noting that for anyone planning to venture out to sea, the offshore conditions might be slightly different, but for those enjoying the beach, these moderate waves promise a fun-filled day.
For runners and cyclists, the morning conditions will require some adjustments, especially for cyclists facing the fresh to strong wind from the northeast. As the day progresses, the wind shifts to a moderate breeze from the north, which could make for a good cycling session, especially with a headwind element. It's also a good day for tennis, albeit slightly breezy. Remember, with a UV index forecast peak of 11, which is extreme, full sun protection is mandatory, and it's advisable to minimize midday outdoor exposure. This means packing sunscreen, hats, and any other protective gear to ensure a safe and enjoyable day out.
As the afternoon develops, we're looking at very cloudy skies with a 55% chance of light rain, so it's definitely worth packing a light jacket to be prepared. By lunchtime, the conditions will still be overcast, but the potential for rain increases as we head into the afternoon. The wind remains a moderate breeze from the north, which, as mentioned, is good for cycling and slightly breezy for tennis. Heading into this evening, the skies remain very cloudy, but the chance of a passing shower decreases to a low 25%. Despite the potential for some rain, it's shaping up to be a great day to enjoy the outdoors, whether that's in the water, on a bike, or just soaking up the unique atmosphere of our village. So, make the most of it, stay prepared, and enjoy the rest of your Saturday!

The Setting
The Torre del Tostón stands above the old harbour as a defensive landmark on a coast once vulnerable to seaborne attack.
Fishing remains visible, though surf schools and holiday accommodation now form a major part of local life.
Together, these landmarks explain why the modern beach should be read as one chapter in a much longer coastal story.
Black lava, pale sand and low volcanic land create a broad, uncluttered horizon.
The western exposure produces dramatic sunsets and a constant awareness of ocean weather.
Conditions can differ sharply around an island headland, so a calm-looking bay should not be taken as a guide to every nearby beach.
El Cotillo rewards visitors who choose the right beach for the day’s conditions rather than assuming the whole coast behaves alike.
For a first visit, the most useful approach is to walk the waterfront before choosing where to settle, because exposure, access and atmosphere can change over a surprisingly short distance.
Whatever the season, wind, swell, tide and beach flags remain more reliable than appearance alone when deciding whether to enter the water.
