About Famara

The Vibe

Famara is one of Lanzarote’s most elemental coastal settings, with a vast beach, a low white village and immense cliffs rising behind.

Caleta de Famara feels informal and surf orientated, its sandy streets and fish restaurants maintaining a simple village rhythm.

The beach is exposed to Atlantic swell, wind and currents, making it a renowned surf location but not automatically suitable for casual swimming.

Its appeal comes from balance: enough activity to feel alive, but a landscape and local history that remain readable.

Volcanic geology is never far from the surface here, and the contrast between dark land, bright water and dry subtropical light gives the coast its unmistakable Canarian identity.

Today's Beach Report

Saturday, July 11, is shaping up to be a fantastic day along our stunning coastline, with its wild and dramatic 6km Atlantic facing surf beach set beneath towering volcanic cliffs. This morning, we have a clear indication that there are no maritime alerts to be concerned about, so we can all enjoy the day without any special precautions. As we head into the morning, the cloudy skies will set the tone for a gentle start, with a moderate breeze from the north that will make for a great cycling session, albeit with a bit of a headwind to contend with. The dry conditions will also make it a lovely morning for a game of tennis, although the breeze might require a bit of adjustment. With temperatures ranging from 19°C to 26°C, it's going to be a comfortable day to be outdoors, and with the forecast looking promising, we can expect a wonderful day ahead.

The beach conditions are looking great, with waves at a moderate 1.0m, which is waist to chest high, making it perfect for surfers and paddleboarders who enjoy a bit of a challenge. The water temperature is a comfortable 21.7°C, which means a spring suit will be comfortable, and a short wetsuit is optional. For swimmers, the conditions are ideal, with the moderate waves making it a fun and exciting time in the water. Surfers will also appreciate the consistent waves, and paddleboarders will enjoy the calm and peaceful morning paddle. Whether you're looking to catch some waves or simply enjoy a leisurely swim, the beach conditions are perfect for a day of water activities.

For runners and cyclists, the morning conditions are ideal, with the cloudy skies and moderate breeze making for a comfortable and refreshing start to the day. However, with the UV index forecast peak today reaching an extreme 11, it's essential to remember to pack full sun protection, including sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses, and to minimize midday outdoor exposure. As the afternoon develops, the wind will remain moderate, which will continue to make for great cycling conditions, and the slightly breezy conditions will still be pleasant for tennis players. The consistent wind direction will also make it easier to plan your outdoor activities, whether you're looking to go for a run, a cycle, or a game of tennis.

As we head into the afternoon, the skies will clear up, becoming mostly clear by lunchtime, and will remain that way into the evening. The wind will gradually decrease, becoming a light breeze by the evening, which will make for a pleasant and relaxing end to the day. Whether you're looking to enjoy a game of tennis, go for a run or a cycle, or simply take a leisurely stroll along the beach, the conditions will be perfect. As the day comes to a close, we can reflect on a wonderful day spent outdoors, enjoying the beautiful coastline and the exciting activities it has to offer. So, make the most of this fantastic day, get out there and enjoy the sunshine, the sea, and the stunning scenery – it's going to be a truly unforgettable day.

The Setting

The Local Anchor

The Risco de Famara escarpment is the defining landmark, forming Lanzarote’s highest and most dramatic northern wall.

The village’s fishing roots remain visible beneath its modern role as a base for surfers and walkers.

Seen from the shore, the anchor provides both a visual reference and a reminder of the community that developed here.

The Landscape

Wet sand mirrors the cliffs, while views extend toward the Chinijo Archipelago and La Graciosa.

The scale is unusually large for Lanzarote: long beach, open sky, strong wind and a mountain face changing colour through the day.

Conditions can differ sharply around an island headland, so a calm-looking bay should not be taken as a guide to every nearby beach.

Famara is best for scenery, walking and experienced water activity, with swimming decisions guided strictly by local conditions.

A short walk away from the busiest access point often reveals the geography more clearly and gives a better sense of scale.

Local signs and lifeguard guidance should shape the swimming plan, especially when wind direction changes.
