Puerto Rico is a purpose-built resort on the southwest coast of Gran Canaria, arranged inside a steep volcanic ravine around a beach, harbour and marina. White apartment buildings climb the dry slopes, while the waterfront concentrates most of the area's boat activity and beach services. Its sheltered layout and sunny position have made it one of the island's best-known family resort centres. Nearly every route through the resort eventually returns to the harbour and central beach.

Puerto Rico Marina and the adjoining harbour are the central anchor. Sailing trips, fishing excursions and wildlife-watching boats leave from this protected waterfront, making maritime activity visible throughout the day. The harbour also explains the shape of the resort: roads, paths and buildings all descend toward the same narrow coastal centre. Nearby Puerto de Mogan represents the municipality's older harbour identity, but Puerto Rico itself tells the story of Gran Canaria's twentieth-century tourism expansion along the dry and sunny southwest coast.

Golden sand and blue water contrast sharply with dark, arid volcanic hillsides. Breakwaters and harbour walls give the central bay a contained appearance, while the ravine rises steeply behind the shore and channels views toward the sea. Development covers much of the slope, yet the underlying geology remains obvious in the shape and colour of the land. The southwest aspect produces strong afternoon light, and neighbouring bays can look close while remaining separated by rocky headlands. Puerto Rico's landscape is compact, engineered and unmistakably volcanic.
