Matalentisco lies west of the built centre of Águilas, where the coast begins to feel drier, rougher and less arranged. A short beach of sand and gravel sits below low, arid slopes, with the Mediterranean open in front and no continuous promenade behind.

The setting is natural rather than remote wilderness. Access tracks, nearby camping and seasonal use are part of the scene, yet the shore retains a strong sense of separation from the town beaches. Its appeal comes from this change of pace: less urban structure, more exposed ground and a closer view of the coast’s mineral colours.

The Local Anchor

The beach belongs to the western approach to Águilas, reached from the road towards Vera. This coast continues towards Calarreona, La Higuerica and the provincial boundary with Almería, a sequence of beaches and low headlands rather than a single built waterfront.

Two restored twentieth-century defensive bunkers stand in the Matalentisco area, part of a group preserved along the Águilas coast. They add a restrained historical marker to a landscape otherwise defined by open slopes and shore.

The Landscape

Official regional tourism information records Matalentisco as a Mediterranean beach about 270 metres long and 15 metres wide, formed from medium sand and gravel. It is described as lying in a natural setting, with access from the Vera road at approximately kilometre 2.8, followed by an unpaved track and footpath.

Facilities are limited compared with Águilas’s urban beaches, although a picnic area, bins and nearby camping are listed. BWID ES620M0032076 confirms this identity at the supplied coordinates. It is not Cala de la Herradura, which is a separate small cove elsewhere on the municipal coast.
