The Local Anchor
Just a stone's throw away, the whitewashed old town of Altea rises like a dream upon a hill, anchored by the magnificent Parish Church of Our Lady of Consolation. Its iconic blue and white tiled domes glisten in the sun, a beacon of Valencian artistry visible from the water's edge. This historic sanctuary, built on the foundations of a 17th-century temple, connects the shore to centuries of faith and community. The town's culinary soul is found in dishes like arròs a banda, a humble yet profound rice dish born from the local fishing tradition. Historically, fishermen would cook the rice in the flavourful broth of their unsold, bony catch, serving the rice "on the side."
The Landscape
El Soyo is a miniature masterpiece of geology and light. The shoreline is a mosaic of dark, volcanic pebbles and smooth black stones that shift and murmur with each gentle wave. Its calm, clear waters are sheltered, creating a natural pool perfect for contemplative swims and snorkelling. The cove is small, a mere whisper of a beach nestled between the small port of L'Olla and the rocky outcrop of Cap Negret. Gazing out from this secluded haven, the horizon is dramatically punctuated by the distant, monumental silhouette of the Peñón de Ifach in Calpe, a timeless landmark on this cherished coast.
