The Local Anchor

Just a stone's throw from the tranquil sands stands the formidable Monterreal Fortress of Baiona, a sentinel of history. Its stone ramparts tell a story of global significance, for it was here that the caravel Pinta returned in 1493, bringing Europe the first news of the New World. After a day spent in the sun, wander into Baiona’s old quarter, a maze of cobbled streets nestled in the shadow of the castle. The Landscape

Ladeira is a graceful arc of pale, fine sand cradled by the calm waters of a protected bay, where the Miñor River meets the sea. This vast expanse, the longest in Baiona, is backed by a protected dune system, a fragile, undulating landscape of coastal grasses that anchors the beach to the land. The water is a clear, cool turquoise, shallow and serene, making it a mirror for the vast Galician sky. On the horizon, the faint, mythical silhouette of the Cíes Islands may appear, adding a touch of mystery to the spectacular, wide-open panorama.
