About Santa Marta
A whisper of history drifts on the salt-laced breeze at Santa Marta, a curve of fine sand nestled in the embrace of Galicia’s Rías Baixas. This is not a shore for solitude, but for savouring the vibrant pulse of Spanish summer life, where the chatter from seaside cafes merges with the gentle lapping of the Atlantic.
The Vibe
The air hums with a relaxed energy, a melody composed of families laughing and the distant clinking of wine glasses from the promenade. Scents of grilled seafood and sweet Albariño wine drift from the nearby old town, mingling with the clean, briny aroma of the sea. It’s a place of sun-warmed contentment, where the rhythm of the day is dictated by the tide and the sun’s slow arc across the sky. The crowd is a convivial mix of locals and pilgrims walking the Camino Portugués, all drawn to the magnetic charm of this historic waterfront.

The Setting
The Local Anchor
Just a stone's throw from the sands, the cobbled streets of Baiona’s old quarter beckon. Here, ancient taverns serve plates of pulpo á feira—tender octopus dusted with paprika—and sizzling zamburiñas (scallops) fresh from the estuary. This culinary tradition is overshadowed only by the monumental history across the bay. The beach sits in the shadow of the magnificent 16th-century Monterreal Castle, now the Parador de Baiona. It was to this very port that the caravel Pinta returned in 1493, carrying the first news of the New World.
The Landscape
Santa Marta is a gentle crescent of fine, pale sand, caressed by the typically calm, crystalline waters of the bay. The beach itself is part of a small peninsula, offering a sheltered position. Gazing out from your towel, the view is dominated by the formidable, stone-walled perimeter of the Monterreal Fortress crowning the Monte Boi peninsula. This dramatic interplay between the soft beach and the historic, rugged fortress creates a landscape steeped in a profound sense of time and place.
