About Melide
The Vibe
Melide is the largest beach on the northern side of the Illa de Ons, a broad crescent of white sand facing the open water at the entrance to the Ría de Pontevedra.
The atmosphere is remote, bright and distinctly Atlantic. There are no roads bringing daily traffic to the shore, and the walk from the island’s landing place creates a sense of gradual separation from the busier central paths. Naturist use is well established, while the beach’s scale allows visitors to spread out along the sand.
Moderate waves and wind can give the water more movement than on the island’s east-facing coves.

The Setting
Melide — White Sand on the Northern Edge of Ons
The Local Anchor
The local anchor is Ons itself, part of the Maritime-Terrestrial National Park of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia.
A small inhabited community, traditional houses, hórreos and the island lighthouse preserve the memory of a population shaped by fishing and difficult Atlantic conditions. Walking routes lead across the island towards cliffs, viewpoints and the dramatic sea opening known as the Buraco do Inferno.
Access is by authorised passenger boat during the regulated visiting season, with visitor numbers controlled to protect the park.
The Landscape
Melide extends for approximately 300 metres and averages around 25 metres wide.
Fine white sand forms a natural, undeveloped beach with low occupation compared with the island’s more accessible shores. The northern location leaves it open to wind and moderate Atlantic swell.
There are no substantial beach facilities beyond basic management and cleaning. Everything brought to the shore should be removed again.
Melide’s appeal lies in simplicity: white sand, open water and the protected landscape of Ons with almost no built interruption between the beach and the horizon.
