About Cabrera
Cabrera de Mar: Between Sea and Burriac The Vibe: Here, the rhythm of the Mediterranean settles into an easy coastal cadence. Waves move across the golden sand with a gentle, persistent murmur, accompanied by the passing of trains, the conversation of families and the occasional clink of glasses from a seasonal beach bar. Cabrera is peaceful without pretending to be remote. The railway places Barcelona and the neighbouring towns of the Maresme within easy reach, while the shoreline remains open enough for long pauses beside the water. Swimmers enter the shallows, walkers follow the coast and small sails appear offshore whenever the breeze allows. As evening approaches, the beach takes on a softer character. The glare recedes from the water, the hills inland deepen into shadow and the ruins of Burriac remain poised above the valley. This is not a hidden wilderness, but a modest Mediterranean shore where sea, settlement and landscape meet without ceremony. The Local Anchor: Rising inland above Cabrera de Mar, Castell de Burriac is the municipality’s unmistakable landmark. Its surviving tower and walls crown a hill approximately 400 metres high, commanding views across the valley and towards the Mediterranean. The visible ruins belong to a medieval fortress, once known as the Castle of Sant Vicenç and later as Burriac. The mountain holds older stories as well, though they should not be confused with the castle itself. On its slopes lie the remains of a major Iberian settlement, while lower in the valley Cabrera preserves traces of the Roman town of Ilturo, including baths, houses and structures connected with ancient wine production. Together, these sites reveal a landscape occupied and cultivated across many centuries. That relationship with the land remains important to Cabrera. The surrounding Maresme has long been known for market gardens, vineyards and produce grown between the mountains and the sea. At the table, this dual identity appears in Mediterranean cooking that brings together fish from the coast, vegetables from nearby fields and the characteristically Catalan meeting of maritime and inland flavours. A carefully prepared mar i muntanya therefore feels at home here—not as a dish inherited from the castle, but as an expression of the geography itself. The Landscape: Cabrera de Mar possesses approximately 1.2 kilometres of Mediterranean shoreline, formed principally by the adjoining beaches of Els Vinyals and El Molí. The sand is golden, varying from finer grains to the coarser texture typical of parts of the Maresme coast. Its width changes considerably, creating generous sections in some places and much narrower stretches in others. The beach is open to the Mediterranean rather than enclosed within a protected bay, so the water cannot always be described as calm or crystalline. On settled days it may appear clear and inviting; when wind or swell arrives, the shoreline takes on a livelier and more textured character. Behind parts of the beach run the coastal railway and the built-up area around Cabrera de Mar–Vilassar de Mar station. Services and seasonal beach bars make the shore convenient, while recent efforts to recover sections of the coastal fringe reflect the continuing need to protect this narrow and changing landscape. Inland, the valley rises towards Montcabrer and the hill of Burriac, forming part of the coastal relief of the Serralada Litoral. The mountains do not press directly against the sand, but they remain a strong presence on the horizon, giving Cabrera its defining contrast. This is a landscape shaped by proximity: beach and railway, cultivated valley and wooded hill, Mediterranean water and ancient stone. Cabrera de Mar finds its beauty not in isolation, but in the close conversation between coast, history and everyday Catalan life.
