About Barra

The Vibe

Barra is one of Galicia’s best-known naturist beaches, a long curve of fine white sand backed by dunes, pinewoods and Atlantic scrub.

The atmosphere is open, tolerant and deeply connected to the surrounding landscape. Visitors spread across a shore broad enough to retain quiet areas, while the absence of an urban promenade keeps attention on sand, trees and sea.

Moderate waves and wind give Barra more energy than the sheltered inner-ría beaches. Calm-looking conditions can change quickly, so swimming should always follow local flags and direct observation.

The Setting

Barra — Naturist Freedom on the Costa da Vela

The Local Anchor

The local anchor is the Costa da Vela and the parish of Santo André de O Hío.

This protected outer coast includes Cabo Home, the hill of Monte do Facho and a sequence of beaches extending towards Nerga and Melide. At the summit of O Facho, archaeological remains preserve evidence of a Galician-Roman sanctuary overlooking the Atlantic approaches.

The villages of O Hío and Nerga provide the nearest human setting, while Cangas remains the principal town and harbour farther east.

The Landscape

Barra extends for approximately 750 metres.

Fine white sand is backed by an important dune system, maritime scrub and pine forest. Rock appears towards the margins, creating varied shoreline habitat and areas used for snorkelling or diving when conditions permit.

The beach forms part of the protected Costa da Vela landscape within the Natura 2000 network. Development is limited, and access is primarily by local roads and footpaths.

Barra’s identity comes from space and acceptance: a recognised naturist shore where dunes, forest and open Atlantic light remain more prominent than buildings or formal beach infrastructure.
