About Playa de Comillas
The Vibe
Comillas beach combines the easy pleasures of a town shore with one of Cantabria’s richest architectural settings. Fine sand, a gentle curve, and the nearby harbour give it a comfortable, sociable character.
Families and swimmers gather near the main accesses, while walkers can move quickly from the beach into the historic streets. The atmosphere feels cultured without losing its informality: towels and fishing boats share the day with views of towers and hillside buildings.
The bay is often less forceful than fully exposed stretches of coast, but tides and conditions still shape safe use. Its appeal lies in the closeness of sea, town, and heritage.
The Setting
The Local Anchor
The local anchor is Comillas’ remarkable architectural legacy. El Capricho by Antoni Gaudí, the Sobrellano Palace, the Pontifical University, and other nineteenth-century buildings reflect the town’s transformation through returning fortunes from the Americas.
Food remains distinctly Cantabrian, with fish, shellfish, rabas, and regional cheeses providing an earthy contrast to the ornate architecture.
The Landscape
The beach lies below the town and beside a small fishing harbour. Its golden sand faces northeast, while green hills and built landmarks rise behind it.
The shore forms part of a compact coastal landscape where cliffs, port structures, and urban gardens meet. From the sand, the town appears close but not overwhelming.
Comillas is best understood as a beach with a cultural skyline — a place where the Cantabrian Sea meets one of northern Spain’s most unusual ensembles of modernist architecture.
