About Ondarreta
The Vibe
Ondarreta carries a softer, more residential mood than central La Concha. Set at the western end of the bay, beneath Mount Igeldo, it feels sheltered by the surrounding land and closely connected to family life.
The sand is broad enough for games and slow afternoons, while the promenade attracts walkers throughout the year. Santa Clara Island sits directly ahead, giving the water a contained, almost theatrical outlook.
Even when the city is busy, Ondarreta often feels measured and composed. Its atmosphere is less about being seen and more about spending time comfortably beside the bay.
The Setting
Ondarreta — The Quiet Western Bay
The Local Anchor
The Peine del Viento is the local anchor. Eduardo Chillida’s steel sculptures are fixed into the rocks beyond the western end of the beach, where wind, waves, and engineered blowholes turn the promenade into a sensory experience.
The Antiguo neighbourhood rises behind the waterfront, offering cafés, restaurants, and a lived-in city atmosphere distinct from the tourist centre.
The Landscape
Ondarreta forms the western section of La Concha Bay, between Santa Clara Island and the foot of Igeldo. The beach is linked to La Concha and Zurriola by a long seafront route across the city.
Rocky edges become more prominent near the Peine del Viento, while the bay itself provides a visually sheltered setting. Tide still changes the width of the sand considerably.
Ondarreta is a beach of gentle geometry — island ahead, mountain behind, and the city held at a comfortable distance along the curve of the bay.
