Playa de Xagn

The mood is spacious, energetic and strongly influenced by the weather. Surfers, kitesurfers and walkers are drawn to the open water and long shoreline, while families tend to stay closer to the main accesses and rescue areas. Even on busy days, the size of the beach usually leaves quieter sections.

This is not a beach where calm bathing should be assumed. Strong waves, currents and changing wind require attention, and swimmers should follow flags and local advice. The same exposure that demands care also creates Xago's sense of freedom.

Xago is a long, open beach in Gozon, extending for about 1,500 metres beneath high ground and a valuable dune system. Golden sand, strong waves and frequent wind give it a much more exposed character than the urban beaches of nearby Gijon or Luanco. It forms part of the protected landscape associated with Cabo Penas.

Gozon is the local anchor, with Luanco serving as the municipality's main fishing town and visitor centre. Its harbour, old streets and seafood restaurants provide a useful contrast to Xago's open natural setting.

Cabo Penas lies farther along the coast and helps define the wider landscape through cliffs, seabird habitat and Atlantic viewpoints. Closer to the beach, Cabo Negro and the surrounding high ground are used by paragliders when conditions allow, reinforcing the area's reputation for wind-driven activity.

Golden sand runs beneath cliffs and a field of dunes shaped by prevailing winds. The beach faces the Cantabrian Sea directly, with little protection from swell or north-easterly weather. Darker rock at the headlands contrasts with the pale shore and green fields inland.

The dune system is one of Xago's most important features and should be crossed only by established access routes. From the beach, the horizon feels broad and uncluttered, while the land behind rises quickly enough to give strong views from above.

Xago changes character with the sky. In calm sunshine it feels expansive and inviting; under cloud or wind it becomes raw and dramatic. That honesty is central to its appeal.
