About Cala Montgó

A jewel of the Costa Brava, Cala Montgó is a near-perfect amphitheatre of leisure, tucked into the coast near L'Escala.

The Vibe

The air hums with a gentle energy, a blend of children's laughter and the clinking of glasses from seaside restaurants. It is a symphony of contentment, where the scent of salty air mingles with the sweet perfume of sun-warmed pine from the surrounding hills. The cove is a magnet for families and locals, their conversations a soft murmur against the rhythmic sigh of the Mediterranean. In summer, the bay fills with pleasure boats, their white sails dotting the turquoise water like confetti, adding to the sense of a shared, idyllic escape from the everyday.

The Setting

The Local Anchor

High on the cliffs to the north stands the stoic Montgó Tower, a 16th-century sentinel built to guard against the terror of pirate raids. From this vantage point, where soldiers once scanned the horizon for enemy ships, one now gazes upon a scene of profound peace. The tower anchors the cove to a dramatic past, its stone silhouette a timeless reminder of the coast's turbulent history. It connects the sunbathers on the golden sand below to the generations of fishermen who sought refuge in this very same harbour, protected from the fierce Tramontana winds.

The Landscape

The cove curves in a graceful arc, its shape suggesting an ancient, sunken cavern sculpted by the sea. Fine, white sand slopes gently into exceptionally clear and calm waters, creating a serene natural pool. This idyllic basin is embraced by the rocky arms of the Montgrí massif, its limestone cliffs and verdant forests providing a dramatic, protective backdrop. The unspoilt southern flank of the bay offers wild beauty, a rugged contrast to the polished perfection of the main beach, inviting exploration along coastal paths.
