About Cala Mesquida

The Vibe

Cala Mesquida opens on Menorca’s eastern coast a short distance from Maó, with a broad bay, a low coastal settlement and an exposed line of sea beyond the headlands.

Houses gather near the shore, yet the bay still feels shaped primarily by rock, sand and the rise of the surrounding land. Its orientation gives the water a clear relationship with the open east, so conditions can change despite the cove’s rounded outline.

The official bathing-water identity is Cala Mesquida in Maó. That distinction matters because Mallorca has another well-known beach of the same name, in Capdepera.

The Setting

Cala Mesquida — A Bay Beneath Punta de sa Torre

The Local Anchor

Punta de sa Torre separates the rocky area of Cala Mesquida from Arenal de sa Mesquida, the sandy beach most commonly used for bathing. Above the point stands a British-period defence tower.

The site is linked to the events of 1781, when Spanish troops landed at Mesquida during an unsuccessful attempt to retake Menorca. The tower was built later as part of the island’s coastal defence system, one of a series raised around the turn of the nineteenth century.

The Landscape

Spain.info describes the beach as a mixture of sand and gravel, with golden sand, a length of about 300 metres and a width of roughly 50 metres. The bay lies between Punta de sa Creueta and the higher ground of es Pas Gros, facing the small Illots d’en Mesquida offshore.

Access is straightforward by road and on foot from the nearby settlement. The urban footprint is limited compared with Maó itself, while cleaning and seasonal beach facilities support its use as an established bathing place. Behind the sand, low vegetation and rising ground frame the cove; ahead, the bay’s rocky margins and islets keep the landscape recognisably Menorcan.
