The Vibe

El Callao continues the urban shoreline east of El Varador, where golden sand, occasional rock and calm Mediterranean water meet Mataró’s seafront promenade.

The atmosphere is active and unmistakably local. Families settle close to the play areas, walkers follow the waterfront and the nearby port keeps masts, boats and harbour movement within view. Summer brings a high level of occupation, but the beach’s generous width prevents it from feeling permanently compressed.

The water is generally calm, although the mixed shoreline and occasional exposed rock add more texture than a completely uniform sandy beach.

The Local Anchor

Mataró is the capital of the Maresme, a coastal city shaped by industry, maritime activity and a long relationship with Barcelona.

The port provides the beach’s most immediate anchor, combining recreational boating with restaurants and public waterfront spaces. Farther inland, the historic centre preserves Roman traces from ancient Iluro and Modernista architecture associated with Josep Puig i Cadafalch.

This mixture of working city, cultural heritage and Mediterranean leisure gives El Callao a more grounded identity than a purpose-built resort.

The Landscape

Official records describe El Callao as approximately 400 metres long and around 54 metres wide.

Its surface combines golden sand with rocky sections, and the bathing water is normally classified as calm. The beach forms a direct continuation of El Varador and has a fully urban setting.

Toilets, showers, cleaning, sun-lounger and parasol rental, sports areas and children’s facilities support a comfortable day beside the sea.

El Callao’s appeal lies in accessibility: a broad city beach where harbour life, promenade activity and the everyday rhythm of Mataró remain close to the water.
