About Playa de Karraspio
The beach is sociable in summer but feels more open than Isuntza on the opposite shore. Families use the sand and picnic areas, surfers and paddlers watch changing conditions, and walkers follow the promenade linking the beach with the Lea estuary and Lekeitio.
Karraspio supports several activities, including surfing, sailing and beach games. Conditions vary with tide and swell, so swimmers should follow flags and remain aware of currents near the estuary side. The broad shore makes it easy to find a comfortable section away from the busiest access.
The Setting
Karraspio is a broad sandy beach in the municipality of Mendexa, on the right bank of the River Lea opposite Lekeitio. It combines family-friendly space, water sports and a recreation area with direct views towards Garraitz Island and the historic town across the estuary.
Mendexa provides the rural municipal setting, while Lekeitio supplies the most visible cultural anchor across the water. Its fishing harbour, basilica and tightly arranged old streets form part of the beach panorama and are close enough to visit during the same day.
The Lea route and Marierrota tide mill connect Karraspio with the estuary's working history. Bars, a hotel and recreation facilities near the beach add convenience without creating a dense resort frontage.
Karraspio faces Garraitz Island and the entrance to Lekeitio's harbour. The beach lies between the open coast and the river mouth, producing a setting where waves, estuary flow and tidal sand all interact. Green slopes and scattered buildings rise behind the upper shore.
At lower tide, the sand expands and the relationship with Isuntza and the island becomes clearer. A causeway from the Lekeitio side may emerge towards Garraitz, but it is not a permanent route and can disappear quickly under incoming water.
The western side feels more connected to the estuary, while the outer sections receive more direct swell. This variety gives Karraspio a broader range of moods than its family reputation suggests. From the waterline, the view unites beach, island, harbour and wooded hills in one of the Lea coast's most complete landscapes.
