About Beniesma

Platja de Beniesma: A Varied Shore beneath the Watchtower The Vibe: South of El Grau de Moncofa, Beniesma follows a quieter and more irregular rhythm than the municipality's principal urban beaches. This is not one continuous ribbon of soft sand, but a changing shoreline where rocky ledges, small coves and stretches of sand appear in succession beside the Mediterranean. The atmosphere is open and informal. Walkers follow the coastal path, anglers settle near the rocks and bathers seek out the more accessible sandy sections. One part of the beach is traditionally reserved for naturism, giving Beniesma a relaxed character shaped by tolerance, space and a close relationship with the natural coast. The sea cannot always be described as calm. On settled days it may move gently through the coves, but the open Mediterranean can also bring moderate waves against the stones and rocky margins. The prevailing soundtrack is therefore one of water meeting different textures—softly across sand, more sharply against gravel and weathered rock. Beniesma feels peaceful without being entirely remote. There are services, paths and semi-urban sections nearby, yet much of its appeal comes from its lack of uniformity. It is a shore to explore slowly rather than experience from a single fixed point. The Local Anchor: The most distinctive historic landmark is the ruined Torre de Beniesma, also known as the Torre de Santa Isabel de Carrillo. Built in the 16th century, it formed part of the chain of watchtowers created to protect coastal settlements and landing places from attacks arriving by sea. Only fragments survive, but their position beside the shore preserves the purpose of the structure. From here, guards could observe movement across the Mediterranean and warn the surrounding community when danger approached. The area was also associated historically with the loading and movement of merchandise, giving this apparently quiet coast a past connected with both defence and maritime exchange. The wider cultural anchor is Moncofa itself, where sea and agricultural plain have long supported one another. Local cooking combines fish and seafood with vegetables and rice from the surrounding territory. Paella, arroz a banda, seafood rice, baked rice and vegetable rice all belong naturally to the municipality's culinary tradition. Citrus cultivation adds another defining flavour. Orange and mandarin groves form an important part of Moncofa's inland landscape, creating a connection between the salt of the coast and the cultivated fields beyond it. The Landscape: Platja de Beniesma extends for approximately 1.2 kilometres and contains several distinct coastal environments. Its natural section includes a recognised naturist area, followed by the remains of the historic watchtower, rockier and more elevated stretches, and small coves formed between coastal outcrops. Farther along, the shoreline becomes sandier and more semi-urban, with promenade sections, nearby residences and easier access. Beniesma should therefore not be described simply as a long, flat sandy beach or as an entirely untouched natural strand. Its identity lies precisely in the transition between these different forms. The Sendero Azul follows the coast, linking Beniesma with the mouth of the River Belcaire and the neighbouring beaches. An ecological footbridge crosses the river channel, opening views towards the wetland vegetation and, inland, the distant outline of the Serra d'Espadà. Vegetation appears in pockets rather than as an uninterrupted agricultural backdrop. Low coastal plants occupy some of the less-developed margins, while citrus groves and cultivated fields belong more clearly to the broader Moncofa plain inland. The landscape is more varied than its flat horizon first suggests: Mediterranean water, sand, gravel, rocky coves, ruined defensive stone and the river environment nearby. Beniesma is not defined by one perfect beach scene, but by a sequence of coastal experiences held together by the path beside the sea.
