About L'Estanyol

The Vibe

L’Estanyol is Moncofa’s southernmost beach, a quiet stretch where the Mediterranean meets the remains of an older wetland landscape.

The atmosphere is open and lightly developed. Anglers, walkers and visitors seeking space are drawn to a shore that feels noticeably less urban than the beaches around the Grau. Wind and small waves provide the principal movement, while the limited commercial frontage keeps attention on the sea and coastal vegetation.

The beach’s natural character makes it better suited to quiet observation than to a highly organised resort day.

The Setting

L’Estanyol — Marshland at Moncofa’s Southern Edge

The Local Anchor

The local anchor is the Grau de Moncofa, the municipality’s maritime settlement farther north.

Traditional seafront houses, summer life and the long coastal path connect L’Estanyol with the wider identity of Moncofa. The town’s Blue Trail follows several kilometres of shoreline, linking developed beaches with areas of ecological interest.

Inland, the coastal plain once contained extensive marshes. Their memory survives in the name Estanyol and in the small water body still present near the beach.

The Landscape

L’Estanyol extends for approximately 900 metres and averages around 30 metres wide, close to the boundary with Xilxes.

Behind the shore lie the former marshland, a small lagoon and protected natural areas including a botanical micro-reserve. The beach also provides habitat for the Kentish plover, a protected shorebird dependent on relatively undisturbed coastal ground.

Its surface is characteristic of Moncofa’s mixed coastline, where sand and rounded stones may both appear.

Facilities are limited compared with the central beaches, though access and seasonal management are provided.

L’Estanyol’s strongest quality is ecological continuity: beach, wet ground and coastal vegetation surviving together at the quieter end of Moncofa.
