About Calahonda

The Vibe

Calahonda is one of the most established beach destinations on Granada’s Costa Tropical, combining clear Mediterranean water with the relaxed rhythm of a small coastal settlement.

The shore is lively in summer, when families, swimmers, and divers gather around its dark sand and waterfront restaurants. Outside the busiest weeks, the long beach regains a slower pace, with moderate waves moving steadily across the coarse shoreline.

Its water is often praised for clarity, but the beach remains open to changing Mediterranean conditions. Calm mornings can be inviting for swimming and underwater exploration, while wind and swell may create a stronger break along the shore.

The Setting

Calahonda — Clear Water on the Costa Tropical

The Local Anchor

Calahonda belongs to Motril but has its own village identity, shaped by fishing, holiday homes, and its position beneath the coastal hills.

Restaurants and beach bars bring the local table close to the water, with grilled fish, seafood, and dishes influenced by the subtropical produce of the surrounding Costa Tropical. Motril’s wider landscape of sugar-cane history, avocado, mango, and custard-apple cultivation gives the area a character distinct from the drier Almería coast.

The Landscape

The beach extends for approximately 1.4 kilometres and is formed from dark sand and coarser material.

Low development follows much of the shore, with restaurants, houses, showers, toilets, and children’s facilities providing a comfortable urban setting. A designated diving area reflects the clarity and rocky underwater features associated with this coast.

Calahonda is a settled Mediterranean shore where clear water, village life, and the steep coastal landscape meet.
