Padrón Beach, Combarro
The Local Anchor
The soul of Padrón is intrinsically linked to the sea and stone. Dozens of iconic hórreos, traditional stone and wood granaries, stand on stilts along the water's edge, a testament to the region's agricultural past. These unique structures, some dating back centuries, create a singular skyline against the water. Steps from the sand, the narrow, winding cobblestone streets of Combarro's old quarter beckon. Here, amidst ancient stone crosses known as cruceiros, you’ll find family-run tabernas. Indulge in the local culinary tradition by sampling impossibly fresh seafood—mussels, clams, and octopus pulled straight from the estuary, often enjoyed with views of the very waters they came from.
The Landscape
Praia do Padrón is nestled within the Rías Baixas, a dramatic coastline where the Atlantic has pushed inland, creating serene, fjord-like estuaries. The landscape is a tapestry of deep greens and blues, with lush hillsides tumbling down to meet the calm, nutrient-rich waters of the ría. The beach itself is a modest crescent of golden sand, offering a front-row seat to the changing estuary light. Across the water, the opposite shore is a mosaic of forests and small villages, while traditional wooden fishing boats bob gently in the harbour, completing a portrait of quintessential Galicia.
