The soul of Tanxil is anchored in the sea, and specifically, in the revered local delicacy: the xouba. These small, flavorful sardines are the pride of Rianxo, harvested from the estuary using the ancient and sustainable xeito fishing technique, a method passed down through generations since the 15th century. In the summer months, particularly around the festival in late July, the aroma of grilled xoubas perfumes the air. To taste them, perhaps simply grilled and served on a piece of crusty bread, is to taste the very essence of this maritime town—a culinary tradition as deep and authentic as the waters themselves.
The Landscape
Tanxil is a gentle crescent of coastline, a semi-urban beach where the verdant green of Galicia meets the tranquil blue of the Atlantic. The beach, stretching just over 200 meters, offers a magnificent panorama of the vast Ría de Arousa, often dotted with the floating platforms of mussel farms. Behind the sand, a lush park provides a cool, shaded retreat, its trees standing as silent witnesses to the daily tidal ballet.
