About Playa Somo
The village end feels lively and practical, with surf schools, cafes and accommodation close to the access points. Farther along the shore, the beach becomes more spacious and elemental, with fewer buildings and a stronger sense of dunes, wind and open sea.
Somo is popular with surfers of different levels, although conditions can be powerful and local instruction is valuable. Swimmers should stay within supervised zones and pay close attention to flags, currents and board traffic. On calmer days, the wide sand also suits families, runners and long shoreline walks.
The Setting
Somo is a vast sandy beach on the eastern side of Santander Bay, extending along an open coast backed by dunes. It is one of Cantabria's principal surf beaches and forms part of a continuous strand with Loredo and El Puntal, giving visitors exceptional room for walking and water sports.
Somo village is closely linked to Santander by passenger ferry across the bay. The crossing provides one of the most enjoyable ways to arrive, with views of the city waterfront, Magdalena Peninsula and harbour entrance.
Ribamontan al Mar is the wider municipal anchor and has a strong surf identity. Schools, board hire and coastal routes connect Somo with Loredo and Langre, while local restaurants add seafood and Cantabrian dishes to the beach-day routine.
The beach faces north and northwest towards open Cantabrian swell, while its western end curves towards El Puntal and the entrance to Santander Bay. Dunes and low vegetation back much of the strand, creating a natural barrier between sand and settlement.
The tide changes the scale dramatically. Low water produces an immense firm surface for walking; higher water narrows the usable beach and strengthens flows around the bay entrance. Santander remains visible across the water, creating a striking contrast between city skyline and open dune coast.
A walk west reveals the long sand spit of El Puntal, while heading east leads naturally towards Loredo. Somo's defining quality is this combination of access and scale: a surf village at one end, a major city across the bay and kilometres of open beach between them.
