Playa de las Salinas

Las Salinas feels active without being enclosed by a dense promenade. Walkers, cyclists and beach users share the long coastal corridor, while windsurfing and kitesurfing activity can add colour and movement when conditions are suitable. The beach is especially appealing to visitors who prefer a wide horizon and easy movement along the coast.

The atmosphere varies along its length. Sections nearer Roquetas feel more urban and connected to services, while the eastern side becomes quieter beside the Ribera de la Algaida. The shore is open to wind, so it does not always have the protected feel of a small bay.

Playa de Las Salinas lies east of central Roquetas de Mar, between the Ribera de la Algaida and the urban beaches around Romanilla. Its broad open frontage, watersports activity and connection with former salt-working landscapes give it a more spacious and transitional character than the town-centre beaches.

The beach takes its name from the salt-making history of this part of Roquetas. The Salinas de San Rafael and the wider Ribera de la Algaida preserve traces of former wetland and industrial use, now crossed by walking and cycling routes. Birdlife, low vegetation and open ground create a marked contrast with the apartment districts nearby.

Las Salinas is also part of the continuous route linking Aguadulce, La Ventilla, Los Bajos, Romanilla and the historic waterfront of Roquetas. This makes it useful as both a beach and a stage on a longer coastal journey.

The shoreline is formed from dark sand, gravel and pebbly material, with a wide Mediterranean horizon. Inland, the ground remains relatively flat, opening towards former salt marshes and the broad agricultural plain of western Almeria.

Westward, the view leads towards the port, Castillo de Santa Ana and the more developed town beaches. Eastward, buildings thin and the coast becomes increasingly associated with the Ribera de la Algaida. Las Salinas is defined by this meeting point: urban Roquetas on one side, wetland and open coast on the other, with wind and watersports reinforcing its exposed character.
