L'Almadrava

The Vibe

L’Almadrava, also known as Canyelles Grosses, is a broad residential cove where fine sand meets deep-blue water beneath the hills east of Roses.

The atmosphere is sociable without feeling intensely urban. Families gather close to the central services, kayaks and pedalos move through the marked channels, and pleasure boats rest farther offshore. The cove’s enclosed shape creates a sense of protection absent from the more exposed beaches around Cap de Creus.

It is particularly valued for shelter from the Tramuntana, the powerful northern wind that can transform other parts of the Gulf of Roses.

The Local Anchor

Roses provides the strongest local connection, with its fishing port, marina and long maritime history.

The town’s harbour remains active, and its restaurants reflect the wider culinary culture of the Empordà through fresh fish, seafood, rice dishes and suquet de peix. Inland, the Ciutadella of Roses preserves layers of Greek, Roman, medieval and early-modern history.

L’Almadrava lies outside the centre, but it remains closely connected to this combination of fishing town, historic bay and recreational coast.

The Landscape

The beach is approximately 500 metres long and around 25 metres wide.

Fine sand, clear water and protection from northern wind define the cove. Hotels, homes and restaurants occupy the surrounding slopes, making it semi-urban rather than isolated.

Seasonal services include lifeguards, accessible walkways, foot washing, loungers and parasols, kayak and pedalo rental, restaurants, kiosks and a designated anchoring area.

L’Almadrava’s character comes from enclosure: a comfortable Mediterranean beach held between developed hillsides, protected water and the wider maritime landscape of Roses.
