Playa el Puntalillo

Puntalillo feels spacious, open, natural and noticeably less urban than La Costilla. Families use the main access areas, while walkers, runners and cyclists explore the wooden paths through the dunes and pines. The beach can be busy in summer, but the long frontage and natural setting prevent activity from concentrating in one compact zone near the main entrances.

Atlantic wind and swell are more apparent away from the harbour. Surf, bodyboarding and other watersports appear when conditions are suitable, while low tide creates a broad firm strip for walking. Shade is available in the pine area behind parts of the beach, although the open sand itself remains exposed.

Playa de Puntalillo begins where Rota's urban promenade ends and continues west beside the coastal dune cordon and pine forest. Its long golden sand, natural backdrop and environmental interpretation facilities make it the main transition between the town beaches and Rota's more protected shoreline.

The Centro de Interpretacion del Litoral and the Jardin Botanico Celestino Mutis are important local features near the beach. Together with the blue walking route through the pine forest and dunes, they explain the coastal vegetation, wildlife and traditional landscapes that Rota has preserved beside the resort frontage.

The town centre remains accessible along the seafront, so Puntalillo can be combined with Rota's historic streets, fishing harbour and restaurants. This connection gives the beach convenience without requiring a continuous built promenade behind it.

Municipal information places Puntalillo at roughly 1.45 kilometres long. Fine golden sand faces the open Atlantic, backed by dunes, wooden walkways, low scrub and a mature coastal pine forest.

Eastward, the promenade and buildings of La Costilla return gradually. Westward, the natural corridor continues towards Los Corrales and Punta Candor, where historic fish traps and additional dune systems shape the shore. Puntalillo's landscape is valuable because the transition remains visible: town, dune, pine and ocean meet without one completely replacing the others. Pine shade also gives the approaches a cooler character.
