About Merón
The Vibe
Merón stretches west of San Vicente de la Barquera in a long, open sweep of sand. The beach has room for surfers, families, and walkers, with enough scale for each group to find its own pace.
Its atmosphere combines accessibility with a natural outlook. The town is near, yet the beach quickly becomes spacious, backed by dunes and low development. On clear days, the mountains add a striking depth to the horizon inland.
Atlantic swell gives Merón an active character. Bathing conditions can vary along the beach, so local flags and lifeguard guidance matter.

Merón — Surf Beneath the Picos
The Local Anchor
San Vicente de la Barquera is the local anchor. Its bridges, harbour, castle, and church rise above the estuaries, forming one of Cantabria’s most recognisable maritime townscapes.
Fishing remains central to local identity. Sorropotún, the town’s tuna-and-potato stew, reflects that heritage, alongside shellfish and fresh fish from the Cantabrian coast.
The Landscape
Merón extends for more than three kilometres and forms part of the coastal landscape surrounding the estuaries of San Vicente. Sand, dunes, and open water create a broad transition between sea and meadow.
The Picos de Europa can appear behind the coast in clear weather, producing the rare combination of surf beach and high mountain backdrop.
Merón is a beach of horizons — ocean ahead, historic town nearby, and limestone peaks rising beyond the green Cantabrian countryside.
