About Canelas

The Vibe

Canelas opens in a broad, unhurried curve just beyond the denser streets of Portonovo. Its fine sand and open aspect give the beach a sense of space, while the low headlands keep the setting recognisably within the Rías Baixas rather than on an exposed ocean front.

The mood is relaxed but not remote. Homes and seasonal services sit close behind the shore, yet the beach still feels separate from the harbour town nearby. Sea, sand and the changing light across the ría provide the essential rhythm, with enough room for a long walk along the waterline.

The Setting

Canelas — A Quiet Arc Beyond Portonovo

The Local Anchor

The strongest local connection is Portonovo, whose fishing port preserves the maritime identity of this part of Sanxenxo. The town’s monument known as A Peixeira honours the women who carried and sold fish, recognising work that linked the harbour to households and markets across the area.

Canelas also marks the beginning of a municipal coastal path towards Punta Cabicastro. From the beach, the route moves away from the urban edge and towards viewpoints over Paxariñas and the rocky outline of the headland.

The Landscape

Official tourism sources describe Canelas as an open beach of fine sand, approximately 400 metres long, in the parish of Adina. Its wide central section is reached directly from the seafront, while rocky margins and the approach to Cabicastro give definition to either end.

The beach’s coordinates and bathing-water code distinguish it from other Galician beaches carrying the same name. Here, Canelas is specifically the Sanxenxo shore beside Portonovo: accessible, substantial and framed by the gentler geography of the Ría de Pontevedra.
