About La Mata

An expansive sweep of honeyed sand on the Costa Blanca, Playa de La Mata offers a more tranquil and traditional Spanish rhythm than its bustling neighbours. This is a place where the cadence of life is dictated by the gentle lapping of the Mediterranean waves.

The Vibe

The atmosphere at La Mata is one of relaxed simplicity. Here, the air is a mellow blend of salt from the sea and pine from the nearby dunes. The soundtrack is not of loud beach clubs, but of families laughing, the soft chatter from promenade cafes, and the cry of gulls overhead. It’s a multi-generational tableau; local elders enjoy leisurely strolls along the wooden boardwalk while children build sandcastles at the water's edge. As dusk settles, the energy shifts to a quiet conviviality, with the scent of grilling seafood wafting from the chiringuitos (beach bars) that line the shore.

The Setting

The Local Anchor

La Mata’s soul is intrinsically linked to the ancient salt trade. Just behind the dunes lies the Parque Natural de las Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja, a vast and vital nature reserve with historic salt lagoons. For centuries, this "white gold" shaped the region's destiny. This history is palpable along the coast, where a 16th-century watchtower, the Torre del Moro, still stands sentinel, a stoic reminder of a time when these shores were defended from pirates. Today, the culinary heritage endures in the local restaurants, where salt-baked fish and traditional paellas celebrate the bounty of the sea.

The Landscape

Stretching for over two kilometres, Playa de La Mata is a grand expanse of fine, golden sand that meets the turquoise Mediterranean. Its northern edge dissolves into a protected system of rolling dunes and vegetation, a rare and beautiful sight on this developed coastline. A long, lively promenade backs the beach, perfect for a sunset paseo. The beach is wide and open, offering a sense of immense space, with the distant silhouette of Cabo Cervera framing the southern view.
