The Vibe

As Fontes is a narrow, sheltered beach on Vigo’s Alcabre shoreline, close to the broader sweep of Samil but quieter in scale. It offers a brief interval between the city’s major beachfront and the more broken coastal edge around the maritime museum.

The shore feels contained rather than expansive. Fine sand, a modest waterline and direct access from Avenida de Samil make it easy to reach, while its smaller dimensions keep the setting visually close and human in scale.

As Fontes — A Sheltered Pause in Alcabre

The Local Anchor

The nearby Museo do Mar de Galicia gives this part of Alcabre its clearest cultural reference. The museum occupies and extends the site of an 1887 canning factory that was later used as a municipal slaughterhouse. Its present complex, shaped by the work of Aldo Rossi and César Portela, combines the old industrial building with new galleries, an aquarium and a lighthouse structure.

The museum interprets Galicia’s long relationship with the sea, fishing and marine resources, placing the small beach within a much wider story of coastal work and knowledge.

The Landscape

Regional tourism records describe As Fontes as a sheltered, fine-sand beach in Alcabre, at the locality of A Ameixeira. Vigo’s municipal listing notes access by two ramps from Avenida de Samil and records a shower and public transport nearby. The beach is also known as A Batería or Los Olmos.

Official sources disagree on its exact length: the regional listing gives about 150 metres, while the city records roughly 230 metres by 16 metres. For that reason, the description avoids presenting one measurement as definitive. The coordinates and bathing-water identifier nevertheless fix the location clearly on the Alcabre coast, separate from other beaches named As Fontes.
