About O Vao

The Vibe

O Vao is one of Vigo’s broadest western beaches, an accessible sweep of fine sand facing the sheltered waters of the estuary. The promenade, parking areas and seasonal services make it unmistakably urban, but the view towards Toralla gives the shore a strong geographical focus.

The beach has room for movement without losing its connection to the neighbourhoods of Coruxo. Walkways cross the sand, the seafront continues in both directions, and the island bridge draws the eye towards the mouth of the ría.

The Setting

O Vao — Sand, Toralla and the Roman Shore

The Local Anchor

The Villa Romana de Toralla, at nearby Finca Mirambell, anchors the beach in a much older coastal history. The archaeological site and interpretation centre preserve the remains of a Roman villa associated with the shore and help explain how this part of Vigo was occupied and used in antiquity.

Across the water, the modern bridge to the island of Toralla adds another distinctive element. Its outline and causeway have become inseparable from the visual identity of O Vao.

The Landscape

Regional tourism records place O Vao in Coruxo, at Fontela, and describe it as a sheltered beach of fine sand approximately 800 metres long. Vigo’s municipal information gives an average width of about 45 metres and lists a promenade, several parking areas, wooden access walkways and facilities adapted for people with reduced mobility.

Showers, fountains and a summer Red Cross post are among the services recorded by the city. The official coordinates and bathing-water code distinguish this Vigo beach from other Galician places called O Vao, including the shore on A Illa de Arousa. Here, the defining setting is the Ría de Vigo, Toralla and the western urban coast.
