About Itzurun
The Vibe
Itzurun has an atmosphere unlike any ordinary resort beach. Towering strata rise behind the sand, turning every walk along the shore into an encounter with deep geological time.
The sea is often active, and surfers and bodyboarders are drawn to the waves. Yet the strongest impression comes from the cliffs: immense layered walls whose lines continue across the exposed rock platform at low tide.
There is a solemn beauty here. The beach feels enclosed by stone but open to weather, with the chapel above and the Atlantic ahead. It invites attention rather than distraction.
The Setting
Itzurun — Time Written in Stone
The Local Anchor
The local anchor is Zumaia, a coastal town at the meeting of the Urola and Narrondo rivers. Above the beach stands the small chapel of San Telmo, dedicated to the patron saint of sailors.
The old town, harbour, and Basque Coast Geopark interpretation give visitors a deeper context for the scenery. Local restaurants connect the day to Basque fish, pintxos, and produce from the surrounding valleys.
The Landscape
Itzurun lies within the Basque Coast UNESCO Global Geopark. Its flysch consists of alternating rock layers tilted almost vertically, recording millions of years of Earth history.
The cliffs rise dramatically behind a relatively short beach, and the intertidal platform becomes more visible as the sea retreats. Heavy swell and cliff proximity mean that tide and conditions should always be considered.
Itzurun is best understood as a geological sanctuary — a place where sea erosion has opened a vast stone archive directly onto the shore.
