Punta Grande projects into the sea at the eastern end of El Golfo. The old waterfront building long promoted as one of the world’s smallest hotels gives the place a singular human landmark.

Beyond Punta Grande, the land rises into El Golfo, the landslide-formed valley in which Frontera’s vineyards and settlements are gathered. After a visit to Punta Grande, a meal of fresh fish, papas arrugadas and herreño cheese, followed by quesadilla, completes the connection.

The Landscape

Facing the north side of El Hierro, Punta Grande is framed by a cooler, greener backdrop and a sea often exposed to full Atlantic energy.

Black or charcoal shore material gives the foam a bright edge and makes changes in water colour especially visible. Because this remains an active Atlantic coast, swimming conditions at Punta Grande should never be assumed from appearance alone.
