About Timijiraque

The Vibe

Timijiraque combines the relaxed feel of a small coastal settlement with the energy of an exposed Atlantic beach. Its broad strip of black sand is unusual on an island where many bathing places are rocky pools or compact coves. In summer, the beach attracts swimmers, families, and people walking the seafront. In winter, stronger conditions make the coast more appealing to surfers. That seasonal change is central to its personality: Timijiraque can feel welcoming and sociable, yet the ocean always remains capable of changing the mood. The beach has space without feeling empty. Houses and a modest promenade give it a lived-in quality, while the dark shore and surrounding slopes keep the landscape unmistakably volcanic.

The Setting

The Local Anchor

Puerto de La Estaca lies nearby and provides the main maritime arrival point for El Hierro. Ferries, fishing activity, and the movement of island life are close, but Timijiraque retains the atmosphere of a separate coastal village. The settlement is also connected with former salt-working activity, another reminder of how island communities used every workable part of the shoreline. Local food continues that practical tradition through fish, potatoes, mojo, cheese, and simple recipes shaped by limited resources.

The Landscape

At around 350 metres long, Timijiraque is one of El Hierro’s larger sandy beaches. The shore is predominantly black and volcanic, with a smaller cove reached beyond a short tunnel. Steep, dry slopes rise behind the settlement, while the bay opens towards the eastern Atlantic. The beach’s form can change with swell and season, and moderate waves are part of its normal character. Timijiraque is a beach of balance — natural but inhabited, spacious but intimate, and calm in atmosphere even when the sea itself is not.
