About Complexo Balnear Ponta Gorda - Pocas do Governador
Ponta Gorda brings a spacious, family-minded confidence to Funchal’s waterfront, balancing the drama of the Atlantic with saltwater pools, broad sun terraces and carefully managed sea access.
The Vibe
The feeling is relaxed but purposeful. Families spread out around the children’s pool, regular swimmers head for the sea stairs, and visitors choose between the sheltered water and the marked ocean swimming area. The complex is large enough to feel comfortable even when the seafront is busy.
There is a holiday atmosphere, but it is not detached from local life. Ponta Gorda sits beside the public promenade in Funchal’s tourist district, so residents, hotel guests and walkers all pass through the same coastal landscape. The result is sociable rather than exclusive.

The Setting
The Local Anchor
Like the Lido, Ponta Gorda reflects Madeira’s tradition of building practical bathing spaces into volcanic rock. It is the second-largest bathing complex in Funchal and has become an important part of the city’s accessible seafront.
Its facilities make it particularly useful for a full beach day: changing rooms, first aid, a supervised bathing area, sun-lounger rental, a bar and terrace, and support for visitors with reduced mobility. During the bathing season, a platform placed offshore adds a playful focal point for stronger swimmers. The nearby promenade links the complex to cafés, hotels and the evening rhythm of São Martinho.
The Landscape
The complex unfolds across a large solarium above the dark coastal ledge. Two saltwater pools serve adults and children, while a tidal pool is refreshed by the movement of the ocean. Stairs lead directly into the Atlantic, but the marked swimming area keeps the experience defined and manageable.
The view is one of strong contrasts: pale terraces, dark lava, bright pools and deep water beyond. There is little conventional beach scenery, yet the sense of being beside the sea is constant. Ponta Gorda does not disguise Madeira’s rugged shoreline; it makes that shoreline comfortable, social and easy to enjoy.
