About Garajau
Garajau is a clear-water beach beneath high coastal cliffs, valued less for conventional resort life than for its protected marine world and strong connection to diving.
The Vibe
The atmosphere is calm, focused and slightly removed from everyday traffic. Many visitors descend by cable car, watching the cliff and ocean expand below before reaching the compact bathing area. Once at sea level, the steep landscape creates a sense of enclosure.
Swimmers share the water with snorkellers and divers, and the mood is shaped by the reserve’s clarity and wildlife. This is a place for looking beneath the surface rather than simply lying beside it.

The Setting
The Local Anchor
Garajau Beach lies within the Garajau Partial Natural Reserve, created in 1986 to protect marine biodiversity and prevent degradation of the seabed. Fishing is prohibited within the protected area and navigation is restricted, allowing marine life to remain unusually visible.
The reserve has made Garajau one of Madeira’s important diving locations. Dive centres and visiting enthusiasts are drawn by clear water and species such as large groupers, while the cable car has made the once-difficult shoreline accessible to a much wider audience. Toilets, changing rooms, first aid and restaurants support the bathing area without changing its main identity.
The Landscape
A narrow shore sits at the base of tall volcanic cliffs, with the Atlantic opening directly to the south. The beach is rocky rather than sandy, and the water deepens into the protected marine environment close offshore.
Above, the Garajau headland and the Cristo Rei area form a recognisable landmark on Madeira’s coast. Below, built structures remain secondary to cliff, water and exposed stone. The cable-car journey emphasises the vertical nature of the island: settlement on the plateau, a sudden drop through open air, then a small human space beside a vast sea. Garajau’s beauty lies in that descent and in the living Atlantic preserved at its feet.
